This year, we are holding the inaugural Great Brighton Williams Sunflower Race. The 3-month long marathon started on Friday 10th May, when we gave each competitor a ‘Russian Giant’ sunflower seedling. The prestigious winner’s trophy will be awarded to the entrant who has grown the tallest sunflower in the allotted time.
Competition is already fierce
There will be two monthly checkpoints along the ‘course’ and verified measurements will be loaded on to the Tallness Table displayed in the office. Early signs of competitiveness were evident with a scrummage to grab the best-looking plants. Fortunately, no injuries were sustained at this early stage of the race.
Stage 1 results will be posted in June so keep an eye out for the early leaders …
